Carolyn Schmies (Laredo, Texas) is a Dean of the South Campus at Laredo College. She began her work experience as a teacher in Indianapolis, Indiana. This assignment lasted one year as she had an opportunity to join General Motors. She had a vibrant thirty- six and one half (36 ½) year career before retiring in 2008. At General Motors she became a manager holding many position that were first for a woman and African American. In 2009, she joined Laredo Community College as a Speech Instructor. In one year, she was promoted to Chair. She serves on many boards and organization in leadership roles such as Leadership Women, United Way, Literacy Volunteers, Rotary, Delta Gamma, Two Year English Council – South West to name a few. She supports the college in numerous ways: Speech Contest, Black History Event/ Women’s Events, Honors Program, Fashion Show and United Way and many more. She has received numerous awards. The most recent are the Barbara Kazen from the United Way and Trailblazing Women from the college twice last year and this year as well. She has travelled extensively touching down in twenty five (25) countries. She lived in India for five years. She is married to Kenneth Schmies and has six children and three grandchildren.
